Textbooks: 9th grade:Literature: New York Prentice Hall Literature, 2007.
10th grade: Literature: Prentice Hall Literature Language and Literacy,2010.
Replacement Cost for textbook: $80.00, novels: $10/each
Student Supplies:
- Pens- including blue or black and red
- Loose leaf paper (college ruled)
- 3 Sturdy Notebooks (labeled: Journal, Literature, Vocabulary) Composition works best

Course Description
Ninth and tenth grade Literature will continue to build on the reading and language curriculum established in middle school. Throughout this yearlong course, students will have opportunities to develop and expand their knowledge of literature and language and demonstrate their mastery level of new learning through performance tasks and assessments.
Grading Scale: Grade Breakdown:
A 90-100 Tests, Papers 45%
B 80-89 Quizzes 30%
C 70-79 Homework 10%
F 69 and below Projects 15%
TEXTS
All literary genres including novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and drama will be interwoven throughout the thematic units, drawing students’ attention to how literary themes can and do connect to their real world experiences. Major works include but are not limited to:
Ninth Grade Novels: The Odyssey, Hinds Feet on High Places, Romeo and Juliet, Night, And Then There Were None, Edgar Allen Poe’s Short Stories, and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Tenth Grade Novels: The Screwtape Letters, Julius Caesar, Fahrenheit 451, Of Mice and Men, ,Antigone, Animal Farm , Raisin in the Sun.
Missed Assignments/Make-Up Work
The Language Arts department policy regarding late work is as follows: No late homework will be accepted unless a student has an excused absence. To receive full credit for a major assessment, the work must be turned in on the due date. After the due date, 10% of the earned grade will be deducted per day for 3 days; after the third day, the student will no longer receive credit.
Expectations:
- Prepared- be prepared for class with all of your materials and arrive on time
- Respect- yourself and others
- Integrity- be honest and responsible
- Discipline- follow the school rules…Everywhere!!
Tardy to Class: Students are expected to be in their seats and prepared for class instruction when the bell rings! Students not in their seats when the bell rings will be counted as tardy. 1st tardy: a reprimand, 2nd tardy: one day detention, 3rd tardy: two days detention.
Conferences: Conferences can be scheduled before or after school. The best way to get in touch with me, especially for urgent messages, is through e-mail or calling the school office at 462-0266.
Video Viewing Guidelines: Within the curriculum there poses the opportunity for teachers to incorporate different forms of technology into the classroom. One of these forms of technology is the showing of clips of related movies or related movies in their entirety. Possible film offerings may include, but are not limited to:

Honor Code: FCA English Department Plagiarism Statement: Plagiarism is the use of another’s words or ideas and the presentation of them as though they are entirely one’s own.
Acts of plagiarism include, but are not limited to:
1. Using words or ideas from a published source without proper documentation;
2. Using the work of another (e.g. copying another student’s homework, composition, or project);
3. Using excessive editing suggestions of another student, teacher, parent, or paid editor.
Plagiarism on any project or paper at FCA will result in a zero for the assignment. Unless directly stipulated by the teacher, collaboration on written work is not acceptable.

Ninth and Tenth Grade Honors Language Arts Addendum
Faith Christian High School

Expectations
The Honors section of 9th and 10th Grade English is set apart from the regular course in that expectations are higher and the subject matter is typically addressed at a different pace and from various angles than that of the regular course. Being placed in the Honors section of this class is a right you earned for this school year. If you would like to be considered for an Honors English course you must maintain a minimum of a 90 average all quarters. This includes conduct and attitude as well as scholastic endeavors.
Supplementary Texts and Projects
A. The following books will be assigned for independent reading during the year:
9th grade: The Epic of Gilgamesh and Pride and Prejudice as well as two approved books of your choice.
10th grade: A Separate Peace , A Tale of Two Cities, and The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn {summer reading}.
Summer Reading
Requirements for First Quarter:
~ Read one book of choice and type a 2-3 page report.
~ Read and be tested for assigned units from text.
Requirements for Second Quarter:
~ 9th Grade: Read Pride and Prejudice and complete project assigned by teacher.
~10th Grade: Read A Separate Peace and complete project assigned by teacher.
~1 Presentation on text as assigned by the teacher.
Requirements for Third Quarter:
~9th grade: Read The Epic of Gilgamesh and complete project assigned by teacher.
~ 10th Grade: Read A Tale of Two Cities and complete project assigned by teacher.
~1 Presentation on text as assigned by the teacher.
Requirements for Fourth Quarter:
~ Read one book of choice and type a 2-3 page report.
~Read and be tested for assigned units from text.
• Homework is essential. It provides you with the opportunity to
review, analyze, and apply what you have been presented in class.
All homework will be checked for completion. Most homework will receive an
academic grade. Be sure to do your best on all assignments. Take-home essays MUST be typed and double-spaced.
