One of our classmate's grandfather is a professional "Search and Rescue" person.  He came in to share a safety program with the Kindergarten and 4th grade about what to do if you are ever lost in the woods.  The most important thing is to stay in one place.  The children were taught to HUG A TREE!  Find a tree near to a clearing if possible and stay right by that tree.  Parents and search and rescue personnel are more likely to find a child quickly if they stay in one place.  He also suggested a small safety kit that everyone should carry if they are going into the woods.  It should contain:

  • A heavy plastic trash bag - this can be used as a small shelter to keep you dry and warm.  Put a small hole in it for your face for air.
  • A whistle to signal where you are.  3 blows of a whistle is an international distress signal
  • A small mirror that could be used to reflect the sunlight to catch someones attention.  That light can be seen for many miles (like 100!)

The kids really understood the movie about Johny and the explanations afterwards.  The coloring pages that he have us show all those important rules.  Have your child look at these pictures and explain them to you to be sure they understand.

Thank you Grandpa!
