Well - It is a snow day and you are tired of shoveling and sledding, and the snowman is staring at you through the window... what can you do now to keep your cooped up kid busy?  Please don't just turn on the TV!

Here are some ideas of things that you and/or your child could do at home that would be fun and educational.  None of these are required, but if you do anything that has some product at the end and you would like to send it into school, I would love to see it and give some stickers.

MATH:

·         Play store with your child using the kitchen cupboards or their toys.  Make price tags with scraps of paper and an old, or unplugged keyboard makes a great cash register.  So far we have been learning about pennies and dimes so those would be good prices to set (7¢, 14¢, 20¢, 60¢…).

·         Right now we are working on recognizing teen numbers, and we will eventually work on numbers up to 30.  Here are some ideas:

o   Play BINGO – Draw up some squares, write some numbers in.  Also make a set of numbers for picking.  Then as you call out the numbers, or your child does, cover each spot with a marker of some sort. (chocolate chips, cereal pieces or fishy crackers might be fun!)

o   Make a set of numbers and then as you chose one, have your child… make a set of that many cereal pieces.  Or you make the sets of cereal and have them match the numbers cards.

o   Using a set of number cards, you could make them do that many jumping jacks, pushups, or climb up the stairs…GET THOSE WIGGLES OUT!!  J

WRITING/READING/LETTERS:

·         Draw a picture and write a sentence story to go with it.  Better yet, make a story book.

·         Make an alphabet book.  Each page is for a different letter.  Kids could write words that start with that letter, draw pictures, or even cut out words or pictures from old magazines or grocery store flyers.  If you don’t want to do all 26 letters, just do the letters in their first name.

·         Cut out a picture from a magazine, or print one from the internet and have your child write a sentence story, or words that it makes them think of.

·         Write a letter to someone – or let them type an e-mail to me!

·         Go to World Book Encyclopedia online (link on my website).  Choose any topic of interest and make a poster or project about it!

Check out the HELPFUL LINKS page on my website for lots of educational websites that the kids can use to play games.

HAPPY SNOW DAYS!!!
